Sedation Dentistry

Sedation is the use of a drug to induce a relaxed state. We use sedation in our office to help patients relax when they are feeling a little nervous about their dental treatment. We successfully treat patients who have been fearful about getting their dental treatment done and have put it off until now. We utilize four levels of sedation dentistry in our office. We'll describe those levels of sedation below.

  • Light Sedation: We use nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen, called laughing gas, to help people feeling just a little anxious overcome those nervous feelings. This type of sedation wears off almost immediately, so driving after treatment isn't an issue.
  • Light Conscious Sedation: With this type of sedation, we utilize a pill that has a light tranquilizing effect. We can utilize this in conjunction with laughing gas, if necessary. Patients like this method because it helps them feel very comfortable during dental treatment. You will need someone to drive you home after using this method of sedation dentistry.
  • Heavy Conscious Sedation: This type of dental sedation is also administered orally, but it will take you to a much deeper state of sedation. We will either use more laughing gas or up the dose/strength of sedation pills to achieve this level of sedation.
  • I.V. Sedation: In some cases we can utilize an I.V. (intravenous) drip to achieve a maximum level of sedation for a dental office. We only use this level of sedation on patients who feel panicked about their dental treatment and can't control it. We also use this type of sedation for some patients who want to do a lot of treatment in a short amount of time.

Contact us today to see if you are a candidate for Sedation Dentistry. You might be a candidate if:

  • You are fearful of visiting a dental office
  • The sights, sounds and smells of a dental office make you uncomfortable
  • You dislike getting shots
  • You need to undergo a considerable amount of dental treatment to fix existing dental issues
  • You have considerable work to be completed and want it to be done quickly
  • Numbing medicine doesn't work very well
  • Your teeth are extremely sensitive
  • You gag easily

Please note: There are also other considerations we make regarding sedation candidates, which may or may not affect your ability to be sedated during dental treatment.

Here are some questions that you might be considering:

Is dental sedation safe?

Yes. Dr. Groba has had extensive training and experience that enables him to safely administer sedation during dental procedures. Each method has also been tested thoroughly and been used in dentistry for many years.

Is my treatment going to be painful?

No. That's why we offer sedation during our dental procedures. If you are fearful of being in pain during treatment, sedation dentistry might be an option for you.

Will I be okay while under sedation?

We will never leave you alone during your dental treatment and we will constantly monitor your vital signs. Either Dr. Groba or one of our staff will be with you at all times.

Will I be unconscious?

No. You will not be unconscious, but you will be extremely drowsy, kind of in a light sleep. We keep you in a state where you will be able to respond to our questions, but you won't be aware of the things going on around you. This way your mind will not be focused on your dental treatment at all.
