COSMETIC DENTURES

Believe it or not, most dentists do not get excited about making dentures for their patients. However, after successfully completing several hundred cosmetic denture cases, I have found the results are many times overwhelming!

Cosmetic dentistry is usually discussed in terms of implants, veneers and whitening treatments. However, both partial and full dentures should be included in the cosmetics category as well. While dentures are usually made for functional reasons rather than esthetics, they can provide improvements in physical appearance that often go well beyond just repairing your smile. Dentures often assist in smoothing out facial wrinkles and filling out sunken cheeks, both of which can greatly enhance your appearance and self-esteem (Figure 1).

Notice how the new denture fills out the dark spaces between the back teeth

and cheeks, eliminates the “bucky-beaver” look and slenderizes the facial appearance.

Cosmetic dentistry is on the rise, and along with it, better oral care.  Technology allows for modern dentures to be just as aesthetically pleasing as implants, veneers, or real teeth. As the patient, you have the power to provide input on tooth color, shape and positioning. A recent survey noted that denture labs reported increased requests for lighter shades of dentures. It is clear the growing desire for whiter teeth does not reside only with those who have kept their natural teeth. At our office, we can make a duplicate of your existing denture if you need a replacement. Our lab has an excellent opportunity to make your new denture fit almost like your old one – like wearing “an old shoe”.

We can also make your very first set of dentures with your input on how you would like them to look. The results are amazing!

Surprise! You will still need regular dental visits! Studies indicate that the majority of denture wearers are failing to keep their dentures clean. We can show you how to care for your new dentures in ways that will promote better oral and systemic health.

Proper care includes regular professional cleanings. When you come in for a cleaning, dentures may be examined for proper fit, function and alignment. If regular use, wear, or some type of accident has damaged the denture, repairs and relining may be necessary. We also like to do an oral cancer screening, which can be performed in just a few minutes. This is something everyone (particularly those over 40 years old) should be receiving regularly.

Along with professional cleanings, at-home treatments are an essential element in denture cleanliness. Recommending daily brushing along with the use of effervescent treatments such as Polident (GlaxoSmithKline) can assist you in preventing the build-up of odor-causing bacteria.

Treatment for Bad Breath

Your smile looks great - but do people back off when they get close?  Don't let bad breath embarrass you! We'll help you discover the root of your bad breath problems and find solutions that will keep your breath smelling fresh and clean.

What causes bad breath?

Bacteria

One of the most common causes is the bacteria that occur naturally in your mouth.  These bacteria release a sulfur compound - and you probably remember the rotten egg stench of sulfur from high school chemistry lab!

The best way of controlling this cause of bad breath is thorough, frequent brushing and flossing.  (These bacteria love to grow on pieces of food trapped between your teeth.)  And don't forget to scrub your tongue, since the bacteria can grow there, too!

Sometimes the bacteria can get trapped because of a crooked tooth that you can't properly clean or floss between.  Other times, the bacteria may actually be trapped inside an old filling or crown that's no longer sealed.  In these cases, we'll work with you to correct the problem and get your breath smelling sweet again.

Bad breath can also be caused by periodontal disease - an infection of the gums.  Both the infection and the bad breath can be controlled by periodontal treatment.

Health problems

Occasionally, bad breath can indicate sinus infections or a systemic problem such as diabetes, lung disease or kidney failure.

If we've eliminated all the usual causes of bad breath, we'll work with you and your physician to determine the source of your breath problems.

Don't let bad breath put a damper on your social and personal life

Mints, breath sprays and other breath aids may offer temporary relief - but wouldn't it be better to eliminate your bad breath problem altogether?  Don't suffer the embarrassment any longer.  We can help!
